The ignition cylinder is a precision mechanical component that endures thousands of rotations over a vehicle's lifetime. Inside, a series of spring-loaded wafers or pins must align perfectly with the cuts on your key for the cylinder to rotate and send power to the starter. In Columbia's climate — where summer heat pushes interior temperatures well past 130 degrees and humidity stays elevated for months — the grease inside these cylinders degrades faster than in milder regions. That heat cycling causes metal components to expand and contract repeatedly, wearing down wafer tolerances and accelerating failure.
